🌨️ HCA Village, Important Update! ⚠️ Due to projected unsafe road conditions from the winter weather, Horse Creek Academy will remain closed tomorrow, Thursday, January 23rd. All activities and events for Thursday, January 23rd, are also canceled. 💙 The safety of our students, families, and staff is always our top priority. 🚨 The Aiken County Government and Aiken County Sheriff’s Department are advising residents to avoid driving as freezing temperatures tonight are expected to create additional hazardous road conditions, including black ice. 💛 With families traveling to HCA from near and far, we want to ensure everyone stays safe and avoids unnecessary risks. ☃️ We hope you’ve been able to safely enjoy this rare and beautiful snow day! Stay warm, stay safe, and rest up. We can’t wait to see you all back on campus on Friday, January 24th!

⚠️ Due to the winter weather forecast and the current Winter Storm Warning Advisory in effect for Aiken County until 9:00 AM tomorrow, school will be canceled on Wednesday, January 22. All school events/activities, and all afternoon and evening events/activities are also canceled on this day. ☃️ Tomorrow will be a traditional snow day, meaning no e-learning assignments will be given. To clarify, HCA has already used four of our allotted e-learning days this school year. Our fifth and final e-learning day is scheduled during February Break to make up for time lost due to Hurricane Helene. 💙 In South Carolina, public charter schools are only allowed a total of five e-learning days per year. At the upcoming HCA Board Meeting on January 27, we will be requesting approval to forgive tomorrow’s snow day. ❄️ We encourage everyone to enjoy the day safely and make the most of the winter weather (if we get snow)! 💛 Thank you for your understanding as we prioritize the safety of our students, staff, and families. We will update you tomorrow regarding school on Thursday and Friday.

📵 Reminder: Free to Focus Begins Tomorrow! 📵 Starting tomorrow, January 13, 2025, HCA will officially implement our Free to Focus policy. This initiative fosters a phone-free learning environment to help students stay engaged, reduce distractions, and build the critical skills they need for success. Here’s a few key reminders: ✅ Why it matters: Research shows phone-free schools reduce distractions, improve engagement, and create a more supportive environment for learning and connection. This is also a mandate for all SC public schools. 🟡 Elementary School (4K–5th Grade): Elementary students should not bring personal electronic or communication devices to school. If a device must be brought, a signed parent permission form is required. Upon entering campus in the morning, devices must be powered off and stored in the student’s bookbag, remaining off until the student is picked up in the afternoon. Link to the parent permission form was in your weekly update and is at the bottom of this post. 🔵 Middle School (6th–8th Grade): Middle school students may bring personal electronic and communication devices to school; however, these devices must be powered off and stored in a bookbag or locker at the start of the school day. Devices must remain off until 3:20pm.
